This event addresses the urgent need for integrated ocean observing systems to assess the impacts of climate change on marine ecosystems and extreme events. As the ocean regulates the Earth’s climate and absorbs most excess heat and CO₂, changes in its physical and biogeochemical state have cascading effects on weather, biodiversity, and societies. To meet growing societal demands, ocean observation must evolve into a sustained, inclusive, and transdisciplinary system that connects physical, ecological, and socio-economic data. Inspired by the broader ambition of SDG 14, the event highlights the value of linking scientific, policy, and local perspectives. It promotes strategies to expand existing systems, integrate extreme event monitoring, and strengthen cooperation across sectors. Emphasis is placed on participatory tools, innovative technologies, and pilot projects to foster actionable knowledge. The goal is not to prescribe a unified new system or institutional structure, but to support ongoing efforts by highlighting emerging needs and sharing lessons across communities.
